Public Access Mobile Radio Network to be rolled out using TetraFlex®

Arqiva partners with DAMM to accelerate roll-out of Tetra digital communications in the UK

20th Oct 2008

  • Deal completes full managed service offering from Arqiva, combining spectrum with DAMM TetraFlex® base stations and handheld terminals

  • Enables organisations to upgrade from legacy analogue radio systems to new Tetra digital radio solutions through one supplier

  • Single- and multi-site operations to benefit from solutions previously available only to the emergency services

Arqiva today announced a technical partnership with DAMM Cellular Systems, a leading provider of Tetra technology based in Denmark, to accelerate the deployment of commercially available digital Private Mobile Radio networks in the UK. The agreement will give commercial and local government organisations access to the latest Tetra digital radio solutions by combining appropriate spectrum with DAMM's TetraFlex® base stations alongside third-party handheld terminals.

Working with DAMM, Arqiva becomes a single point of contact for organisations wishing to take advantage of the benefits of Tetra solutions. Some industries are already adopting the technology, which is ideally suited to public and private sector businesses, including transport operators, local authorities, airports and shopping centres. Single and multi-site organisations will be able to make the transition from legacy analogue radio or, in some cases GSM, to Tetra digital trunked radio systems.

Tetra technology allows an increase in capacity over standard spectrum usage, helping to eliminate radio congestion, as well as providing dedicated one-to-one, one-to-many and short data messaging (SDS) communication, and offering encryption to eradicate security breaches. Tetra systems also have a number of fall-back modes, if used as part of a network, such as the ability for a base station to process local calls, which means that communications are not affected by any potential network downtime.

By combining available spectrum with DAMM's Tetra technology and handset terminals, Arqiva is able to bring to the mass market digital Private Mobile Radio solutions which have previously been readily available only to the emergency services.

David Green, Director of Strategy & Marketing at Arqiva's Public Safety group, said: "We are starting to see the adoption of Tetra by a range of organisations and our aim is to make the technology more commercially available in the UK. To encourage organisations to make the transition we need to ensure it is both simple and straightforward to integrate, whilst being as affordable and available as analogue. We chose DAMM as our supplier of choice to help us achieve this and they have an excellent reputation in the marketplace.

"Making the transition from analogue to Tetra digital radio can be a big step for many organisations but this partnership means we can guide our customers through the whole process. Arqiva is now in a position to support on everything from initial advice, providing spectrum and equipment through to offering an ongoing managed service on the system, allowing organisations to focus on their core day-to-day operations."

Per Skovsund, Director of Systems Business at DAMM Cellular Systems, commented: "At DAMM, we are focused on Tetra and driving its development forward. Arqiva is strongly placed to bring digital Private Mobile Radio solutions to the market and we are delighted to be supporting this significant process with our TetraFlex® products and solutions. Working as Arqiva's partner will ensure that Tetra is more available than ever for organisations in the UK, and we are confident that the partnership will be a success."
